A note from the desk

How today's drop was graded.

Every morning at 9:00 AM EST, the six of us on the curation desk pull from the photographers' overnight submissions and argue about them until 8:55. Today's call was unusually easy: Kenji shot a single walk through Kabukichō between 11:40 PM and 1:10 AM, and almost every frame had something the cameras were doing on their own — the puddles were catching the kanji, the steam was bending the magenta, the crosswalk was acting like a wet mirror.

We graded the set warm by half a stop, lifted the shadows only where the neon needed to breathe, and rejected three frames where the noise reduction had eaten the film grain we bought the cameras for. Nothing here is AI-generated, nothing here is upscaled, and nothing here is from a stock library. If you want to know why that matters, the answer is in the puddles.
